Itching and irritation

Hemorrhoid itching in Montreal has several causes

Persistent itching around the anus is one of the three complaints that brings almost everyone here. It is also the one least likely to be hemorrhoids on its own, and the one most often made worse by whatever has been tried for it.

  • Causes separated, not assumed
  • Products reviewed before procedures
  • Examined at the first visit

Not one cause

Itching is the least specific symptom here

Hemorrhoids can itch, particularly when a prolapsed one is producing moisture that keeps the skin damp. But so can a healing fissure, a skin tag that makes the area hard to clean properly, a reaction to soap or wipes, and several skin conditions that have nothing to do with any of it.

That is why this is the presentation where treating before looking goes wrong most often. A procedure aimed at hemorrhoids will do nothing at all for itching that was coming from a contact reaction, and the examination is what tells those apart.

The sibling pages cover the ones that get confused with each other most often: fissures, which hurt as well as itch, and skin tags, which make hygiene harder rather than causing the irritation directly. Both are worth ruling out before anyone treats a hemorrhoid.

Working it out

Narrowing down the cause in Montreal

  1. What you have used

Soaps, wipes, creams, powders and how long each has been going. This question changes the answer more often than any other.

  2. When it itches

Constantly, at night, or only after passing stool. The pattern separates a moisture problem from a skin reaction.

  3. The external look

Skin condition, tags, moisture and any visible fissure are all assessed directly without an instrument.

  4. Then inside

An anoscopy checks whether a prolapsed internal hemorrhoid is the thing keeping the skin damp.

What makes it worse

The things people try that make it worse

Scented wipes, medicated soaps, antiseptics and vigorous cleaning are the four that come up most often. Every one of them is an attempt to fix the itching, and every one of them can maintain it instead by keeping the skin irritated. Several weeks of exactly that is a very common history here.

Steroid creams are their own version of the same trap. They often work briefly, which is persuasive, and then the itching returns the moment the cream stops, so the cream continues for months. The creams guide is direct about what that pattern actually means.

So the first intervention is usually subtraction rather than addition: stop the products, keep the area dry, and see what is left after a fortnight. Conservative care covers the rest, and red flags covers when itching is not the main event.

Common questions

Hemorrhoid itching questions in Montreal

What people ask after several weeks of trying things that have not worked, or have made it worse.

No, and it is the symptom least likely to be hemorrhoids on its own. Fissures, skin tags, contact reactions to soap or wipes, and ordinary skin conditions all produce it in the same place.
Warmth and moisture both make it worse, and both peak in bed. A night-time pattern points more toward a skin or moisture problem than toward a hemorrhoid that needs a procedure.
Scented or medicated wipes are one of the commonest things keeping the irritation going. Plain water and genuinely drying the area afterwards is the version that tends to help instead.
That is the usual pattern with steroid creams, and it is why people stay on them for months. The relief is real and temporary, which is not the same as the cause being addressed.
Only if a hemorrhoid is genuinely what is driving it, which is why we look before treating. A band placed for itching that was coming from a soap reaction changes nothing.
Give subtraction about two weeks. Stopping the products and keeping the area dry takes that long to show, and what remains after it is the thing actually worth treating.

Irritation

Why this one gets looked at first

Least specific symptom

Itching has more possible causes than bleeding or a lump, which makes treating it on description the least reliable.

Products come up first

What you have been using changes the answer more often than anything else in the history.

Subtraction before addition

Stopping soaps, wipes and creams for a fortnight tells us more than adding another treatment would.

A band may do nothing

If a contact reaction is driving it, a procedure aimed at hemorrhoids will not touch the itching at all.
